About the Tutors

Our resident artist and tutor Julie Coghlan is a watercolour artist who originally trained as a Surface Pattern designer. After graduating in Contemporary Applied Arts, she is now practising Textile design with an emphasis on felt making techniques ranging from basic to advanced levels.

Jan Beadle designs and makes contemporary woven textiles for fashion, interiors and accessories, incorporating felting, knitting and many off loom techniques to embellish her work. She recently left University of Cumbria with over 25 years of experience teaching weave to degree students.

Jan Hicks is a graduate in Contemporary Applied Arts from the University of Cumbria.  She makes pictures and accessories using a wide variety of techniques including felt, weave and machine embroidery.  She likes to try and combine traditional and contemporary techniques and explores the capabilities of fabric and thread.

Gill Ferguson is a textile/designer maker who works in felt and stitch, she creates a range of products including rugs, scarves, beads and wall hangings which she sells in galleries as well as teaching adults and children textile techniques.

Jan Huntley Peace has had a wide ranging career in fashion, art & design and sculpture. She has worked for international renowned couturiers like, Zandra Rhodes and Jean Muir. Jan graduated in fine art and has gone on to make her mark in original Jewellery design. Jan is also a fun and friendly person who loves working with people of all abilities.

Caroline King is a Batik artist who lives and works in Cumbria where she also exhibits and sells her work. She enjoys running Batik workshops and giving people the opportunity to experiment with colour and be creative.

Jayne Mann designs and makes ceramics. Since Jayne graduated with a 1st class degree in Contemporary Applied Arts, she has developed her techniques in painting, drawing and the use of colour. She successfully uses these skills to embellish her ceramics, making them very much individual pieces.

Julia Neubauer is a textile artist working with wool and felt to produce a range of designs using machine knitting, needlefelting and stitch under the business name of Chameleon.  She is a member of Made in Cumbria and Craftsmen Upstairs as well as the Woolclip and Woolfest co-operatives.  Julia graduated in 1983 with an honours degree in multidisciplinary design and has been working as a practitioner and teacher ever since.  She completed a National Award specialising in fashion and textiles in 2009.
